LIFE IN THE FAST LANE • As Adam Peaty gears up for his attempt to claim a third back-to-back Olympic title this summer, Sam Rider tries to survive his weekly gym routine
Monday WORKOUT 1 • In the pool, Peaty clocks up to 55,000 metres in a typical training week. Out of it, his workouts are designed to develop explosive power, to accelerate through the water, and muscular endurance, to cling on for the finish line. “It’s never about how much can you lift, it’s how fast can you lift it – and how long can you maintain that speed and velocity,” he says.
Tuesday WORKOUT 2 • Peaty’s workouts are notably back and posterior-chain heavy – with some variation of pull-ups featuring in all three. Why? Because swimming is predominantly a pulling motion, which requires “a lot of muscular endurance”. If pull-ups are your kryptonite, perform these assisted, ideally standing – rather than kneeling – on a band looped over the bar.
Wednesday WORKOUT 3 • Peaty credits his monstrous lung capacity to teenage years spent sprinting up and down hills around his hometown. “Aerobically I know I’m extremely fit and probably will be as long as I train,” he says. To keep his anaerobic energy system firing, he’ll throw himself head first into this hour-long HIIT circuit once or twice per week. Take a deep breath – it’s a rollercoaster.
THE MONT BLANC MONSTER • The Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) is among the most challenging and prestigious trail running events in the world. Typically held annually in the last week of August, it circumnavigates the iconic Mont Blanc massif. Covering approximately 106 miles, with a gruelling elevation gain of around 32,800 feet, the race demands exceptional endurance, technical skill, and mental fortitude – as Dominic Bliss witnessed for himself at last year’s event…
