Gr 3-5-With crisp photographs, this leveled reader introduces a range of common weather events, from fog to thunderstorms to droughts. Proficient to advanced upper elementary readers will find themselves progressing steadily through the predictable, but comfortable, organization of information. Historical examples of famous weather events or references to places around the world help readers connect with the fluid, explanatory text. Engaging visuals of varying sizes and a clear, inviting tone smoothly lead readers through the sections of basic vocabulary and definitions associated with weather. This book is best suited for students who are comfortable with extended sentences, including the use of semicolons and words like organism and precipitation, with simple explanatory sentences mixed in to allow for a quick reading pace. While there is some mention of molecular terms, like particles and charge, the explanations are generally broad overviews of specific weather patterns and include sensory or descriptive language to detail relatable experiences of the events. VERDICT A rich array of science terminology is woven into this visually appealing book, designed to challenge upper elementary readers with advanced syntax and introduce meteorological phenomena.-Rachel Mulligan
