He thought the past was finally behind him
Shade Sterling has carried a torch for Lizzy Conners since senior year of high school. But the timing never felt right for them, especially since his ex-girlfriend, Ariel, disappeared without a trace years ago. Now, with their ten-year class reunion approaching, Shade is tired of waiting. Determined to move on with his life and take a chance with Lizzy, he's all in...until a car is dredged up from a local pond and Ariel's remains are found inside.
As the newly appointed sheriff, Lizzy must investigate every single lead—including the ones that point right to Shade. She knows she can't let her heart get in the way of an investigation, but she can't accept that Shade is guilty. Now if she can only prove it—both to the town out for justice and to herself.

Elizabeth Conners has been sheriff for less than a day when she gets called to a local pond where an SUV with a body inside has been found. She recognizes the car instantly and the victim as her frenemy from high school, Ariel Matheson, who disappeared on graduation night. The timing couldn't be more perfect--their ten-year high school reunion is coming up this weekend. Lizzy senses that one of her fellow classmates is the killer, as Ariel terrorized everyone, including Shade Sterling, Lizzy's crush and Ariel's ex. Shade was hoping the reunion would be his chance finally to ask Lizzy out, but the past seems to be working against him. He figures three days at a ranch for the reunion might give him an opportunity to pursue his goal, but the killer has other plans. VERDICT Veteran author Daniels's latest (after Luck of the Draw) has a bit of a slow start, but once the action picks up, it doesn't stop.--Kellie Tilton, Univ. of Cincinnati Blue Ash
