A diplomat appears at Richard and Kahlan's audience to tell them that the Golden Goddess demands surrender; her clawed minions, appearing out of thin air, present one last existential threat before an era of peace. Unfortunately, Richard and Kahlan can't use a magical shortcut to travel to safety--Kahlan is pregnant with the twins who will continue their magical line. As they explore alternatives, they discover that an enemy is living in the physical manifestation of a chaos spell, hidden under their palace; they must conquer that before moving on and beginning their journey. There are more delays, and more old enemies to face, but, eventually, they reach a place where Kahlan can safely give birth. Richard gets to save the world one more time, attacking the heart of the Golden Goddess' power with unexpected, uneasy allies, paving the way for the Golden Age he promised Kahlan. This book is an omnibus of the late Goodkind's Children of D'Hara series (The Scribbly Man, 2019, etc.), and fans will appreciate the familiarity of his storytelling style.
