GEMtones 2024/2025 Block of the Month

UNDER one ROOF • In a short span of six years, Leesa Clark-Miller-berg fell in love with quilting, and designed and built a retreat center and shop like no other. Eight years after opening its doors, quilters flock to her Salt Lake City-area oasis.

A Conversation on MODERN & Traditional Quilting • Defining what makes a quilt modern or traditional isn’t always clear-cut. To explore this topic in greater depth, in each 2024 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine, Joanna Figueroa, a traditional quilter, is holding a dialogue with a guest designer. In this issue, Joanna switched it up and took on the challenge of creating a modern quilt and invited designer Betsy Chutchian to make a quilt using the same classic block.

SIMPLE MAGIC • NO TRICKERY HERE—THIS QUILT IS AS EASY AS IT LOOKS! ASSEMBLE BASIC BLOCKS USING HALLOWEEN FABRICS FOR A THROW THAT CASTS A SPELL.

SUMMER’S END • SAVOR THE LAST DAYS OF SUMMER BY STITCHING A QUILT WITH VIBRANT FLORALS AND OCEAN BLUES.

twirling LEAVES • Channel the beauty of falling autumn leaves into a bed-size quilt that features fall fabrics and a spinning block design.

Pumpkin TRAILS • Follow the Irish Chain as it leads past gorgeous fall pumpkins and through bright patchwork fields in this precut-friendly throw.

BACK ISSUE BLOWOUT!

tiny FLOURISHES • Decorate a table with English paper-pieced hexagons arranged in a diamond shape. Negative space leaves room for embroidery stitches and bead accents.

AUTUMN BOUNTY • CELEBRATE THE SEASON WITH A QUILT FEATURING PUMPKIN AND STAR BLOCKS MADE IN A MODERN FALL COLOR PALETTE.

SURROUNDED BY love • A friend’s breast cancer diagnosis inspired this hand-pieced throw quilt featuring stars, hearts, pink fabrics, and lots of love.

Back to Basics • Refer to these tips and techniques when you need information to make a project.

One Last Stitch • Stitch a fall pincushion showcasing pumpkin, basket, and star blocks.
